My Wedding Speech

I was going to try and wing my speech but I thought better not in case I forget something!

I’ve never spoke in front of a crowd before so bear with me and forgive me if I ramble…

I didn’t know where to begin so I thought it was best to start from the beginning…

The Start

One afternoon in July, 6 years ago (nearly 8 now), I met up with India, and another friend to give her some cupcakes I had baked for her birthday. We sat on a bench talking for god knows how long and we saw, in the distance, Ewan walk around the corner. Our friend shouted him over. Before this, the last time I spoke to Ewan was over 2 years ago, so we had met each other beforehand but I thought he was the most cocky and arrogant person I’d ever met so I avoided him from thereafter.

Anyway, I stayed sitting on the bench with India while our friend was talking to Ewan. I overheard, well… to be fair Ewan does talk quite loudly so anybody could have heard, them talking about this upcoming party and that he was wearing a costume. We were saying every character we could think of but gave up guessing. That’s when Ewan said, Spiderman… now my love for superheroes was at its peak back then so his love of superheroes swayed my opinion of him.

A few hours later, I got a friend request on Facebook and we have been inseparable ever since… Not long after, I found out he decided to take a different route home that day, so I do believe in fate.

But it wasn’t until the 14th of September that year that he finally asked me to be his girlfriend. I remember saying to him, “So, how is this going to work? Anniversary-wise? Weeks? Months? Years?”

I never thought I would be lucky enough to marry him 6 years later…

… and what 6 years it has been…

Funny Stories

We agreed that we would share 2 funny stories about each other with you all, well funny as in laughing at each other rather than with each other…

It was bloody hard to pick just 2!!

When we lived in Essex, we went to the burger van one morning which was only a minutes’ walk from where Ewan lived. We were walking along the path and Ewan was talking away to me… not looking where he was going… and walked straight into a lamppost!

Well… I was crying! I was almost kneeling on the path because I couldn’t stand from laughing so much!

The second story, again we were living in Essex when this happened. Ewan’s brother drove me, Ewan and Mum to go pick up a rental car. We stopped off at a petrol station before we headed to Colchester and Ewan went into the shop to get some drinks.

He opened the door to get into the car but had his hands full, so took a bit longer to get in.

Well, his brother thought he had got in the car, so he started driving forward but, in the process, driving over Ewan’s foot!

He shouted at his brother making it obvious that he had not got in the car… so his brother reversed and accidentally ran over his foot again!

Last Year (2018)

And we have definitely had our fair share of difficulties along the way… I have been debating whether or not to mention about what happened last year but it was a life changing year… I know you will all look at me and think I’m crazy for saying this, but I’m glad I went through it all.

Last year, during the first month or so when my health was critical, I spent nearly each moment in tears because I was scared. I had no idea why I was there. I just wanted to go home plus I thought I would never come home.

I thought I would never get to marry Ewan.

I know he’s going to deny it when I tell you all this, but after I had my tracheostomy, nobody knew if my voice would ever be the same again, or if I was able to talk again at all. One afternoon when Ewan came to visit me, the nurse changed my regular tube to one that allowed me to try and speak.

After a lot of coughing, I was able to tell Ewan that I love him… and he cried. Not only did it remind me of the odds that were against me, but more importantly, this man still loved me and I’m forever grateful.

The whole journey has taught me that I need to live in the here and now, not the past because it cannot be changed and not the future because it’s the unknown. But the here and now, I want to make each second count.

The Infinity Stones

Ewan, instead of thanking you. I wanted to do something different. You’ve seen this little bag quite a lot lately, haven’t you? You would never guess in a million years what is inside this bag just by looking at it.

What I need you to do, is to listen to each word carefully and I’m guessing it won’t take you long to realise what this bag holds.

But first, I need a little help from a few people…

Avengers Assemble!

(Our nieces and nephews stood up and assembled around Ewan. Each niece and nephew held a Infinity Stone so that when I mentioned the stone’s name, whoever was holding that specific stone would hand it over to Ewan)

You always keep me focused on creating a better reality.

You know how to keep me calm in the space around me.

One of the things I love about you is that behind your tough exterior, you have an incredibly wise mind.

I think it’s clear that we are soul mates and I will do anything I can for you.

You have given me the push to achieve the inevitable, being the motivation behind learning to walk again and crossing the finish line at the superhero Tri. My time with you is precious and I cherish every second.

Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to face my fears. You’ve given me the strength and power to overcome any obstacle in my way.

Now you hold the infinity stones. And together… we can take on the universe. Just remember, you’ll always be my Undercover Superhero.

Like I said earlier, I’m glad I went through it. I realised miracles do happen but they don’t happen just by themselves. Love and care from those around us help create miracles. And I certainly wouldn’t be here today without each and every one of you.

So, I just want to say a few special thank you’s…

Mum, I’m sorry I gave you the fright of your life last year, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do for me. I love you so much and I’m so lucky to have you as my mum.

Jackie and Shaun, thank you for everything you’ve done for us. We love you both very much and we hope our marriage remains strong and everlasting like yours. And thank you so much for our upcoming honeymoon!

Abbie, thank you for raising the man of my dreams and for making our beautiful buttonholes.

Charlotte, thank you so much for creating our beautiful bouquets and making our table centrepieces. I will cherish them forever.

Charlie, thank you for capturing our marvellous day!

Marie, thank you for making me look beautiful.

Jill, you’ve been by my side from day one, and thank you for being my matron of honour. You’re the craziest woman in my life and don’t ever change. Thank you for my dress and your work colleagues for our decorations.

My bridesmaids, India and Belinda. India, you’re a true friend and I love you so much. You’re bonkers, funny, weird but that’s what makes you wonderful! Belinda, we’ve been friends for 18 years… where the hell has the time gone?! Thank you for being my bridesmaid.

And we have been fortunate to be blessed with the most amazing nieces and nephews along the way, and treasuring memorable moments, some of which we would like to share with you.

From G claiming my crown as the best on the crane machines in the amusements.

To teaching P how to ride a bike.

From watching K turn from a quiet little girl to a downright chatterbox.

To watching J, take her first steps

From seeing M falling in love with Spiderman and The Avengers.

To teaching M to stick his tongue out… sorry that was me!

From watching R being mischievous and climbing everywhere she shouldn’t.

To actually be able to hear H say my name.

And meeting J for the first time yesterday. (Day before wedding).

We just wanted to take a moment to let them all know that we love each and every single one of them and how proud we are of the them. We may not always be able to see each other but we promise to be there for you always. Our day would not be complete without them. They are and always will be our little superheroes.

In Memory

7 amazing people would be here today if heaven wasn’t so far away. To my Grandad George, Ewan’s mum Liz, my step-grandad Bill, my Nanny Gwen, Ewan’s Grandma Ruth, my Uncle Terry and my Grandad Les. We hope you’re watching from above with a smile upon your faces. We miss you each and every day and you remain in our hearts always.

Each vase represents a family member that is in heaven, and their favourite flowers or colours.

My Nanny Jennie would be here today but she’s currently in hospital recovering from a hip operation. So, when the song she requested is playing, which is Any Dream Will Do, please think of my Nan.

Thank You

Lastly, there’s one final huge thank you…

Grace (my OT from rehab), the best occupational therapist on this planet. You’ve got a heart of gold and we have some funny memories together. But the best moment for both of us was when we went wedding dress shopping together! Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to sign the register today as neatly as I did. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to pick up and place the ring on Ewan’s finger. Thank you so much for everything. Sassage!

I wouldn’t have been able to walk down the aisle today, if it were not for (PT and PT assistants names). How you managed to put up with me for 6 months I don’t know…

PT (my current PT), thank you for all you’re doing for me, you make me work hard in each physio session so thank you for wearing me out so I get a decent night’s sleep!

E, my rehab mum, you are the most lovable woman I’ve ever met, you’re funny and there’s definitely never been a dull moment with you. You’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Sophie, god it broke my heart the day we parted ways. You’ve been one of my best friends and you’re just incredible. You’re kind, smart and always know how to make me laugh. I treasure our friendship.

PT (rehab PT), I know you don’t like compliments but just hear me out. My journey wouldn’t have been the same without you. For once, I can’t put into words how thankful I am for all that you’ve done for me. I remember when you said to me, “never say never with me” and I didn’t believe you because I didn’t want to get my hopes up of walking again.

But you were right. You enabled me to achieve my dream today. Thank you so much. You are a true superhero.

  1. Awww Ami, I don’t usually get mushy at wedding-related stuff and yet this got me in the feelies! You must have been so scared when critical in hospital and worrying you’d never get to marry the love of your life. But you got through and out the other side, to a new chapter of your life. A huge congratulations by the way! Also, it’s surprising just how many people walk into lamp posts, isn’t it? I’ve done it on more than one occasion. BUT I’ve never come across someone who’s had their foot run over twice on one occasion. Ouch 😆

This is a beautiful post, and you’ve done a wonderful job with your tributes to those around you and those whose memories you’ll always cherish. You rock, Ami 💜💚

    1. Aww thank you Caz! It was frightening, each second counted and I didn’t know if it would be my last. It was the first time for me doing a speech and speaking in front of lots of people, they all probably thought bloody hell, Ami’s spoke more with her speech than she has in all the time I’ve known her 😂😂 i know, Ewan is special in that way haha! Thank you, I was quite proud of the little details that I thought of myself 🤗💚
